CounterCurrent - What & Why

Man has severed his relationship with his Lord and forgotten his duties for which he was liable. The obsession with life’s transient pursuits and possessions has overtaken meaningful goals. Spirituality has become meaningless and virtues such as ethics and righteousness have lost their glamour. 

Abandoned is the message of God brought by all revealed religions; not least the final revealed message, Islam. Far from studying the religion with an objective outlook, the average person has fallen prey to malevolent forces wishing to malign it. Unfounded claims and baseless assertions are now increasingly finding an audience, thanks to the misportrayal of it by influential and non-influential agencies. Consequently, what we get is an extremely negative perception of the Faith in the minds of those whose daily diet is the mainstream media and who cannot find time to explore for themselves where truth lies. 

CounterCurrent literature is a humble effort in this direction. It seeks to engender God-consciousness and spirituality in a material-oriented society. It also aims to develop critical thinking in minds socialised into a single narrative and accustomed to seeing the one side of the coin. It attempts to provide its readers with an alternative source of information. 

Much of the negative perception that prevails is a result of ignorance. It is the lack of an alternative media; a media that would provide unbiased information and portray things in their true image. The publication of CounterCurrent attempts to remove misconceptions mainly about the final Divine message and eliminate any misunderstandings in regard to it. 

Upon its launch CounterCurrent was just a magazine that was distributed (free of charge) to major public places, such as libraries, universities, etc, as well as other establishments. It was also distributed individually where appropriate and possible. 

We had linked up with some passionate distributors, who were eager to carry out distribution alongside their jobs. Their contribution broke new grounds, as we were able to reach those we could not have imagined. From revellers and merrymakers going to nightclubs to white collar workers returning home; from clerks and secretaries to bank managers and military personnel; and from young and boisterous adolescents to high-minded intellectuals; the literature was being received and read by one and all, and with positive feedback. 

Then, for a period of time, due to insufficient resources and funds, CounterCurrent became inoperative. And with it went down all the associated benefits. During this time of inactivity all those who had benefited from its work and fruits continually encouraged and insisted on its reinstatement. 

Now, with much consideration, CounterCurrent is back on the scene, with the grace of the Almighty, and with renewed vigour and fervency. Also, with the new launch came a new set of strategies and plans. 

Consequently, although still in existence, the print literature has now been downsized and there is more concentration on the development of material and its online circulation. The print literature is intended to run parallel to the digital production and distribution. 

We have greater ambitions on all fronts. On the print side for instance, we envisage (Allah-willing) a Europe-wide circulation, and beyond.
